Da Nang (in Vietnamese Đà Nang) is a city in central Vietnam. It is the capital of the province of Da Nang and is an important port for the central Vietnam but also for southern Laos. The city has Vietnam's fourth largest population with 608 000 inhabitants (2004) in the central place. The whole municipality has 764 500 inhabitants (2004). Da Nang has one of Vietnam's three international airports, Da Nang International Airport. The other two are in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon. Da Nang was for three centuries ago a thriving venue with merchants from Japan and China. Today the area around Da Nang a living museum under UNESCO's world inheritance wings. Da Nang was to become one of Vietnam's most important ports during the French period in the 1800s. During the Vietnam War Da Nang airport, airbase was America's largest airbase in Vietnam. The main attractions in Da Nang are the museum which contains many objects from the Champs culture and Marble Mountains, where there are many caves that have been used as Buddhist temples. Da Nang Cathedral was built in 1923 by the French and the Cao Dai Temple is one of the largest in Vietnam.
